...escobar opened its doors in Wakefield in November 2003 with the owners noticing a niche in the market for a city centre live music venue / indie venue, the venue was a breath of fresh air for the music lovers of Wakefield in a sea of dance music, that was threatening to engulf everything and at the right time as the indie scene was emerging and Wakefield was being noticed by the music industry due to the heights of the cities favourites The Cribs. As escobar evolved, it fast became a Mecca for people into there music to meet and with the focus on new and emerging talent, over the years such acts as the Arctic Monkeys, Pigeon Detectives, Kate Nash, Jack Penjate, Reverend and the Makers, The Enemy, Mumford and Sons and many more you can see on our gig listing, have passed through escobar with The Cribs onto bigger things, with some of the said returning to savour the intimate small gig venue that they started their careers in.

In February 2009 it was decided to expand into Leeds searching for a suitable venue that could hold the small intimate gigs that escobar was renound for, having found a property previously looked at 3 years ago it was decided that the venue could be transformed into escobar, with the addition of a restaurant on the upper floor that was to open shortly after the main venue had opened.

We offer, not only exciting bands but an unrivalled selection of premium drinks, from imported beers like Desperados, Corona, Vedette, Timmermans, Duval and good old Red Stripe ( in cans of course ) to list just a few. Our range of spirits is vast but chosen with the utmost integrity. we’ve craft gins, single malts, lots of rums and bourbons, premium spirits and liqueurs that can be sipped or mixed, or if its cocktails you require, take a look at our exciting menu where we are sure you will find a cocktail to suit your taste.

One question we have always been asked constantly is, why don't you play dance music? Why don't you play R & B? , simply because we don’t like it that’s why!, if we had a pound for every time someone asked this question we would be rather wealthy by now.

People always say how good the music is, so you will just have to trust us with this one.… or go back to the mainstream Alcopop loving venues! That’s right we don’t do Alcopops either!

England has the best barometer of music (dance, rock or otherwise) in the world. escobar chooses to play what it likes good old Indie & Rock and sticks to it and we choose to be a part of that barometer influencing and loving what we do.
